There are many different causes for tooth discolouration. These include ageing, coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, certain types of medication, excessive amounts of fluoride and the consumption of tetracycline as a child. All of these can contribute to your teeth not looking as white and bright as they should.

At Oakleigh Dental Centre we have been whitening our patient's teeth with take home bleaching kits for some time now. However, we have had many enquiries from patients wanting an alternative method where they can achieve quicker and even whiter results all in the dental chair in a single visit. HOW DOES Zoom 2! WORK?

Zoom 2! is performed in the dental chair. It consists of a light activated whitening gel with an active ingredient of hydrogen peroxide being placed onto your teeth. As the gel is exposed to a laser light the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, allowing oxygen to enter the tooth enamel and dentine, bleaching away discolouration of the enamel and dentine whilst the structure of the tooth remains unchanged. Depending on the severity of the discolouration we may need to apply the whitening gel in a couple of applications, the whole process however shouldn't take any longer than an hour and a half. We will then send you home with some gel that you can apply at home in the next week.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Once you have bleached your teeth they will never return to their original colour. The results will last for years and can easily be maintained using a touch up gel should any discolouration occur. A high level of oral hygiene will need to be maintained including flossing daily and brushing twice daily to maintain the teeth. However, discolouration can recur with continued consumption of tea, coffee, red wine and smoking.

IS BLEACHING SAFE AND ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Zoom 2! has undergone extensive research and clinical studies to show that under the supervision of a dentist Zoom 2! is perfectly safe. Zoom 2! however is not recommended for children under the age of 13 years or pregnant or lactating women.

For a few days after bleaching has taken place you may experience sensitivity to things like cold air and water. This is only temporary and we will give you a calcium gel to place onto your teeth to help reduce any sensitivity that may be experienced.
